Self Portrait
The top pic was done last night, the bottom one today. I always find self portraits incredibly hard - it's awkward to measure anything in a mirror and difficult to look objectively.
You have a great blog. I like the quality of your lines and your shading is really good. You capture values really well. I'm curious--what's a narrow boat? I should google it, I guess. Nice work!
thank you for your kind comments! A narrowboat is a very long and narrow boat similar to a barge and centuries ago they were an important means of carrying stuff up and down the canals. Nowadays they are used by all sorts of people mostly for fun!
the shading is really "interesting. I like your proportion so much. I tried to do a friend and his chin was far too up when I looked from a distance. It's different when the artist is close to the work and then evaluate from a distance. From a blog-distance, the work is really inspiring. Best regards and lots of encouragements, Misha
My name is Angie Wood and I live on a narrowboat on the beautiful Oxford canal.
A long time ago in the eighties I studied Art and Design at Goldsmiths College and went on to be a paste up artist and then a graphic designer. I’ve never stopped painting and drawing though – I painted pet and animal portraits for a while and over the past two years have begun creating small oil paintings of vintage objects, textiles and flowers. I collect items from fleamarkets to paint and my little narrowboat is getting fuller all the time! I’m particularly delighted by colourful patterns on textiles and ceramics and I also love painting reflective surfaces. I’m usually attracted to items from the early part of the twentieth century, which bring back memories of my great aunts’ and grandmother’s cosy houses. My artistic aim is to pay homage to the things I paint by observing them as closely as I can, and to create something beautiful that will hopefully make people as happy as I was when I was making it!

I love your work. I can't draw very well at all..I'm quite new at it. Your portrait is wonderful. I'd like to draw like you when "I grow up." :o)

I am totally enamored with the idea of living on a long boat...and I think your self portrait is skillfully executed. Welcome.
